Gennady Golovkin spoke little in the week of the fight against Saul Canelo Alvarez, but the day he did, after the last face-to-face after the weigh-in ceremony, he launched a provocation to the Mexican and in passing to some fans.
Golovkin weighed in at 167.8 pounds and Canelo at 167.4 pounds. Both came off the scales, saw each other face to face once again this week, with intense looks, without provocations, and then came the last words of the protagonists of the show to be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Before launching the forceful message, he took the opportunity to congratulate all the Mexican fans who were present, as this day marks another anniversary of the Independence of Mexico.
“Congratulations to all Mexicans for their Independence Day, it is a very special day. And I just say to those who know about boxing, they know who the real champion is,” said GGG, who did not say it, but clearly alluded that he is the true champion and that those who support Canelo surely do not know about boxing.
Golovkin was booed
The boos were not long in coming for the Kazakh fighter, who will surely have less support than Canelo on the day of the fight, but with his comment he earned the rejection of some Mexicans who even booed him after his statement.
Thus, Canelo will arrive as favorite to the fight against GGG, who at 40 years old will try to become the undisputed 168 lbs. champion against the top favorite, who even assured that he will do everything in his power to knock out the Kazakh.
It will be the third fight between both fighters. They drew in September 2017 and faced each other again a year later, when Canelo won by majority decision. Thus, the trilogy comes four years after their last fight and they are ready.
