We’re a week out since Ozzy’s latest studio effort Patient Number 9 has been available to the masses and one of the most striking things about that release is the number of guest artists that came on to support the Prince of Darkness’ 13th solo album.
For those keeping score at home, the record features contributions from guitarists Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and Zakk Wylde. Chad Smith and the late Taylor Hawkins will hold down the album’s rhythm, along with bassists Robert Trujillo of Metallica, Guns n’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, and Chris Chaney of Jane’s Addiction. If that’s not a who’s who of rock royalty and legends, I don’t know what is.
Earlier today, the Ozzman and his camp released the first part of a three-part web series outlining the making of Patient Number 9. Produced and created by his son Jack Osbourne, the six minute clip embedded below features interviews conducted by British journalist Phil Alexander. Many of the album’s contributors, as well as producer Andrew Watt and Ozzy’s wife Sharon, take part in the mini-docuseries.
According to Watt, the one main through line for the record’s contributors was their appreciation for the man on the album’s cover.
“Everyone was there because they wanted to be. Everyone was there because the fucking worship Ozzy. That’s it.
“The guests were picked specifically. This song needs to get heavy as fuck – bring in Zakk Wylde in here an d have him turn this into a metal classic. This song has a Sabbath thing going on – let’s get Tony [Iommi] and make it legit.”
I can’t imagine trying to wrangle that many superstars and their egos to work on a single record. That must have taken a lot of effort. Or maybe it didn’t. When you have someone as iconic as Ozzy fucking Osbourne calling you to play on his next record, are you really going to say no?
The next two installments of the behind the scenes series will run on September 23 and September 30 at 11 a.m. EST.
